Blue Radiance Color Guard Program

About

The Blue Radiance Color Guard Program is a movement-based program involving the use of dance, flag, rifle and sabre and is comprised of two different ensembles—the Blue Radiance Color Guard and Blue Radiance Winter Guard. In the fall marching season, members of the Color Guard Program perform as the Blue Radiance Color Guard with the Blue Coat Regiment Marching Band, serving as the ensemble’s main visual component for their award-winning productions.

During the second semester, the team moves on to their indoor season and competes as the Blue Radiance Winter Guard as part of the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit (FFCC) performing at regional competitions throughout the state.

Program History

Making its debut with the FFCC in 2014 the winter guard competed in B Class, placing first in class at Premiere, and were promoted to Class AAA as a result of their success. Fast forward through the years and the team has competed in Scholastic B, AAA, AA and A, and is currently a Class AAA team. The winter guard has made school history on several occasions: In 2015 they were the first indoor ensemble to medal at Circuit Championships earning silver in the Knights Division of Class AA, and in 2022 the team brought home the school’s first Circuit Championships gold medal after taking the top prize in the Coast One Division of Class AAA. The team is also the school’s first back-to-back medalists having earned silver in 2021. In 2024 the team increased their gold medal count to two after taking the top spot in the Class AAA Paradigm Division at Circuit Championships.

During the most recent Florida Bandmasters Association District 7 Marching Music Performance Assessment in 2023, the color guard earned a rating of Superior, marking the 16th consecutive year the program has been rated as such. Since the 2000 marching season the program has been rated Superior a total of 19 times. (There is no data available for ratings for 1998 or 1999 and the event was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

  • The Color Guard Program made its full season FFCC debut in 2014 competing in Scholastic B Class. The team placed first in class at Premiere, the first competition of the season, and were promoted to Class AAA as a result of their success. At 2015’s Premiere the team repeated this accomplishment and earned first place alongside a promotion to Class AA.

Despite it only being the team’s second year on the circuit, 2015 was a year to remember: The team competed in four FFCC regionals and took home first place for each performance—one of which consisted of prelims and finals performances, bringing their total first place count to six. Their season culminated at Circuit Championships in Daytona Beach where the team placed second in the Class AA Knights Division, becoming Riverview High School’s first FFCC Championships medalists. The team’s placement at Circuit Championships, coupled with their record for the season, prompted the FFCC to promote the team to Class A at the conclusion of the season. The team stayed in Class A for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

For the 2020 FFCC season, the Color Guard Program made school history once again by welcoming a junior varsity group. The junior varsity team competed in Class B and the then-varsity team as a member of Class AA. In the 2021 season the program had one team that competed in Class AAA with their show, “Paper Planes,“ and took home the silver medal in the Beyond Division at Circuit Championships.

For the 2022 FFCC season the winter guard made school history by winning first place with their program, “For a Moment,” in the Scholastic Class AAA Coast One Division at Circuit Championships—becoming the first team to earn gold at Circuit Championships for Riverview High School. This also made them the first back-to-back medalists for the school. In 2024 the team increased their gold medal count to two after taking the top spot in the Class AAA Paradigm Division at Circuit Championships.
